It is the unit for symbol rate or modulation rate in symbols per second or pulses per second. In telecommunication and electronics, baud ( symbol: Bd) is a common measure of symbol rate, one of the components that determine the speed of communication over a data channel. The speed includes bits for framing (stop bits, parity, etc.) and the effective data rate is lower than the bit transmission rate. The abbreviation is usually given together with the line speed in bits per second, as in 9600/8-N-1. As such, 8-N-1 is the most common configuration for PC serial communications today. Digital communications networks implementing the standard can be used effectively over long distances and in electrically noisy environments.Ĩ-N-1 is a common shorthand notation for a serial port parameter setting or configuration in asynchronous mode, in which there is one start bit, eight (8) data bits, no (N) parity bit, and one (1) stop bit. The standard is jointly published by the Telecommunications Industry Association and Electronic Industries Alliance (TIA/EIA). Electrical signaling is balanced, and multipoint systems are supported. RS-485, also known as TIA-485(-A), EIA-485, is a standard defining the electrical characteristics of drivers and receivers for use in serial communications systems.
